Sometimes, getting light into a room cannot be achieved by using standard windows. This is especially true in city centre locations, where terraced houses are common. One simple solution is to fit rooflights overhead, allowing the sun to penetrate deep into a design.
Quite economical, these rooflights can transform a room which otherwise would be dark and gloomy. Not only is a dark room essentially poor for the “soul”, but it misses an opportunity to allow the heat of the sun to reduce the energy bills of a house. The example presented here is from the living area of a Limerick city centre terraced house extension. Comparitively speaking, the extension was built within a similar budget as that of a normal extension. From speaking to the client, the overall cost of the extension was completed for approximately €90/sq.ft., a figure which is similar to a normal build in the countryside. The project was designed and project managed by Conor Dennison, between 2004 and 2005.
